These hazardous substances can appear harmless, such as cooking oils and greases, but pose a significant risk for our local infrastructure, community health, and environment when poured into drains.
Enrolled Environmental Student Ambassadors work in teams to perform outreach to local community leaders and news outlets, present informed research, unleash their creativity to design informative digital graphics, and more. We assign roles to align with each student’s strengths and passions, and verified volunteers will additionally guide and support students in each team’s tasks.
Student Ambassadors are required to attend one virtual meeting a week on Friday afternoons after school hours. Additionally, attendance at a minimum of two in-person ELOC activities per semester is expected. These activities could potentially include events such as local farmers markets and fairs, meetings with community leaders, or talking to their community about relevant environmental issues (i.e. hazardous household substances). All students will be chaperoned when performing in-person activities, as safety is our first priority.
The program duration is for a full academic year; the Fall 2024 semester and the Spring 2025 semester. A monthly stipend will additionally be provided to each enrolled student, awarded based on factors such as attendance, active participation, and completion of assignments. Students must be prepared to take responsibility for the role and assignments delegated to them.
Through this program, students will provide meaningful aid in keeping the Westchester watershed(s) clean for not only aquatic life, but for our means of drinking water as humans.
We aim to educate communities across Mount Vernon, New Rochelle, and Port Chester on Hazardous household materials.
